“If you don’t take charge of shaping your own destiny, others will apply their agenda to you.” Eric Allenbaugh
So in an effort to use up some miscellaneous items I had pre-cooked in the refrigerator as well as hanging out in the root cellar, I came up with this strange mix of food for dinner last night. Composed of:
1 acorn squash
1/2 lb shrimp
1/4 head of red cabbage
4-5 mushrooms
1/4 cup baby organic carrots
1/2 cup broccoli
It could have used a bit of coconut oil in with the squash, not to shabby, but needs some seasoning.
So after several months of being benched in Hapkido, and struggling through physical therapy, I”m going to give it my best to attend class on a regular basis. Last nights first sword class was very interesting as we all are starting from ground zero without any previous formal training until now. Hopefully some good work during class will help bring me out of the physical funk I’ve been in for such a long time and in dire need to get away from!
Ok ok ok. So I’ve taken a bit of a break from trying to make homemade sauces until TODAY! My first successful attempt a couple of months ago, followed by two horrible failures was enough. Though after the break it seems my luck has changed for the better. A little change in tools, ie from immersion blender, to whisk, back to immersion blender, and finally to my mini-prep cuisinart, which by the way, I have determined to be the weapon of choice for this particular purpose. I decided upon a food network recipe for aioli but added 1 tsp of smoked paprika to the mix for a little spice. I’ll have to say that it actually turned out tasting pretty good on the remaining cooked egg white.
Here’s the mix:
1 egg yolk room temperature
1/2 cup light olive oil (it’s what I had, otherwise i would use the 2/3, 1/3 blend)
3 cloves garlic
1/2 lemon, juiced
dash salt (I’d use sea salt if i had any around)
1 tsp smoked spanish paprika (I use Penzy’s)
Basically followed the recipe from food network, garlic, salt, pulse; egg yolk, lemon juice, pulse; oil a little at a time since i had to take the lid off, pulse, paprika, done.
After a little bit of consideration July will officially be my 30 day caffeine free month. Since last year, I’ve regularly consumed approximately 32 oz of black drip coffee about every morning missing once a week or so, and like the spring leaning of April, this will be an experiment to see how cutting caffeine out of my diet will positively, or negatively affect my mood, performance, how I feel, etc.
On another note, the change to the Paleo way of eating has been of great benefit to me. I have noticed many similar things that others have mentioned that I’ve read elsewhere. As of today, I don’t have a good reason to add back in much if any of the items that I’ve removed from my diet. Good luck to those who decide to give it a try, and if you need any help, let me know!
A coworker recently told me that it takes 2 weeks to break a habit. Funny enough, we happened to be talking about the damned candy dish at work full of chocolates and how I had a bad habit of eating about six mini-bars a day. At one point I wouldn’t touch the stuff, it gradually sneaked up on me, and I was back at the candy trough again. NO GOOD! So I tried again, two weeks, no candy dish, and at the same time I had begun my spring LEANing which didn’t hurt. Fortunately I made it, and am off the candy/crack. Next up, possibly caffeine.
So my lesson to you from this.. As it take time to break a habit, it also takes time to develop habits as well, regardless of what they are. For me it tends to be making it to the gym on a regular basis. I’d stop, start, stop, start… It always seems that the hardest thing to do is start going, but once you make it habit, it is much easier to leave excuses behind and continue regular attendance. It is very difficult to make any sort of progress if training is so intermittent and dispersed that you cannot build on your previous work. Of fundamentally greater concern is when one finally reaches a level that the training must be more focused and begins to stretch from week to week rather than from one workout to the next.
Keep progress moving forward, develop good habits, and keep your hand out of that candy dish!
Just thought I’d post a quick image from a wonderful brunch with my mother on memorial day. It was a great morning of preparing fresh veggies from her garden, grilling some nice halibut steaks on the grill, experimenting with a little red cabbage seared in the cast iron skillet, and a superb glass of wine complements of the Randolph family! Bon Appétit!!
